"I am a potter because I love the feel of clay. I enjoy its versatility and the making process. This sort of plasticity is not found in any other medium and the process can be stopped and made permanent at any point by firing. It is rather like making the stones under one's feet.

My inspiration comes from the sea and landscapes, and the textures found in nature. These recent pieces chosen for my application all relate to the sea and are glazed with either a gentle or vibrant palette of colours. The more sculptural pieces are glazed with a very pale dry glaze.

My work is either wheel thrown or slab built and fired in an electric kiln to stoneware temperatures 1260 centigrade in an oxidizing atmosphere. Intensely coloured glazes of blue, turquoise, purple, pink and green overlap on simple forms. Dry glaze textures are created by overlapped stoneware glazes only. The decoration is produced using wax and then sgraffito, and sometimes inlaid oxide and glaze stains. Some pieces are decorated with coloured and metallic lustres."

Biography

1963-64 Foundation Wimbledon School Of Art
1964-67 BA Ceramics (2.2)

Sarah Perry gained a BA Hons in Ceramics at Camberwell School of Art where she was taught and influenced most by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.

In the late seventies she lived and worked in Argentina, exhibiting in Buenos Aires in between journeys around South America. During the nineties her work was sold at Liberties, Heals, and The Conran Shops in London, Paris and Tokyo. After this, her work slowly took on the 'sea palette', renewing her love of Cornwall ,particularly the artistic legacy of St.Ives. She began making the 'Hot Landscape' pots after an inspiring trip to Australia. She now lives and works in Greenwich, London, a stone's throw from the River Thames, producing work for galleries all over the UK. Sarah is a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
