Merran Esson

Born in Tumbarumba, New South Wales in 1950. Lives in Sydney.

Training and Professional Experience

In the mid 1970's she studied ceramics at Caufield Institute of Technology. After travelling and living in London, she returned to Australia in 1977 establishing a studio in Sydney. 1999-2003 she completed her Master of Art Degree at Monash University. She is lecturer of ceramics at the National Art School, Sydney.

Merran Essons Thema ist das Gefäß, das für sie den Weg darstellt, aus der Tradition eigene Ausrucksformen zu entwickeln, in die Erfahrungen der persönlichen Lebensgeschichte einfließen.

Seitdem sie 2004 in Sydney ein neues großes Studio bezogen hat, hat sie sich zunehmend an große Formate gewagt, mit denen sie auf die räumliche Situation reagiert. Sie hat bewusst den Schritt über den "häuslichen" Maßstab hinaus gemacht, an dem sich Gefäße üblicherweise orientieren. Auch dort, wo sie bei herkömmlichen Größenverhältnissen bleibt, geht es ihr nicht um Funktionalität im Sinn von Gebrauchstüchtigkeit, vielmehr will sie die Aufbauprinzipien von Gefäßen und ihre unterschiedlichen Funktionen offenlegen. Zu diesen kann es (wie im Fall aufgegebener Wassertanks) auch gehören, dass sie als Zielscheibe für

Schießübungen dienen. Mit den perforierten Wandungen einiger ihrer Gefäße setzt Merran Esson den Opfern solcher vandalischer Akte ein Denkmal. Auch Griffe, Tüllen, Sieblöcher, Ränder und Beine sind für sie nicht einfach dem Gebrauch dienende Vorrichtungen, sondern versteckte Einladungen, die Gefäße aufzuheben und in die Hand zu nehmen, sie zu berühren oder mit ihnen zu gießen. Sie sind hervorgehobene Punkte, an denen sich individuelle Vorstellungen zu erkennen geben und die als Bilder eher von Bezügen zur eigenen Person als von funktionalen Erfordernissen bestimmt werden.

Merran Esson's theme is the vessel, developing a form of expression from tradition, creating direct links with her world, often as an aerial view of the places where she has lived.

Since moving into a new large studio in Sydney in 2001 she has increasingly dared to work on large pieces, which react to her spatial situation. She consciously took the step to investigate beyond the 'utilitarian' norm to which vessels are generally orientated. Even there, where she sticks to traditional sizes, it is not about functionality in a utilitarian way, rather she wants to explore the structure of vessels and their different functions. It can also be that some of them, e.g. water tanks rendered useless in Australia's rural landscape, can serve as a receptacle for target practice. With the pierced walls of some of her vessels Merran Esson gives the victims of such vandalised acts, a memorial. Even handles, spouts, sieve holes, rims and legs are, for her, not merely functional devices, rather hidden invitations to pick up and handle the vessels, to touch them or to pour. They are accentuated points where individual associations are revealed and defined as images determined by personal references rather than by functional demands.
